It's been a while since I read this, but I do remember that it was excellent!
This poem resonates today. Beautifully written and thought provoking. Rudyard Kipling is a genius. I love all of his works!!!
I have loved this poem since i read it in the third grade I carry acopy in my wallet even now to remind me what it takes to be aman.Irecomend every boy read this poem.Though I am 80 years old now I still try to live up to what Kipling wrote to his son.
It is about developing your brain, mind, and spirit, to work and not expect a handout. It is a plan to develop into a thinking, caring, adult, who care about how he act.
A standard to live by. An inspiration to re-cage and re-think reality. Everyone should read through it at least once.
In this rather short and simple poem we read the words of a father trying to tell his son how to conduct himself on life's journey. A man of knowledge and forgiveness of being able to handle the adversities of life and to move forward with alacrity and meaningfulness is what Kipling conveys. To be both merciful and understanding and not to despair with reversals which seem to be irreversible? To not be cocky when in victory not to despair in hopelessness in defeat is the attitude one needs to exhibit to succeed. Life is to be savored and experienced through one's self-discipline and attitude towards the joy of living.
One can only hope to emulate the words of the wise father. In reality this is very difficult, however this poem serves as the goal for which the son should abide by in his future endeavors!
I love this poem and the illustrations in this book. I bought this as a graduation gift, and it was perfect. Such a moving poem, especially given that Rudyard Kipling's son died in the war.
