I found it riveting, even at my advanced age. Even though about an 11-year old girl, it seemed directed to older young adults to me. I've given a copy to my 11-year-old granddaughter, and am eager to see what she thinks. She has always read way above her level, sometimes alarmingly so. Also, she has grown up in downtown NY Manhattan, which makes the novel far from her experience. I may have followed so closely because I read the author's intro, and knew it was about her husband's mother. But, mostly, I just thought it was an intimate, realistic tale of huge proportions. Hurray for author Theresa Nelson and all her research, which sounded grounded to me, and I do a lot of the same kind of searching for historical fiction.

I recommend it highly as a most interesting tale (based on actual events). It's told in the voice of the feistiest 10-year-old girl you're ever likely to meet, and it's got adventure, humor, several memorable characters, and a lovely ending. It's positioned as a novel for "young readers," but don't let that scare you off even if your age is in very high double-digits (like mine).
A phenomenal story beautifully told. I loved The Year We Sailed The Sun. Written by the highly gifted Theresa Nelson, this book tells the true story of young Julia Delaney who in 1911 found herself, along with her older brother and sister, Bill and Mary, quite suddenly orphaned. Ms. Nelson tells Julia's story with simple honesty and vividly takes us into her world of the Kerry Patch of St. Louis, Missouri. This is a heart warming tale that is highly recommended and will be embraced by readers of any age.
I LOVE that book. She has courage that one could ever imagine. I was into tje character as soon as I finished the first page of the story. I hope you love this warm adventure too…
Theresa writes beautifully and this was a wonderful gift to give to a fan of hers.
A captivating book with characters who draw us into their world, mostly that of a Catholic girls's school. Nuns and gangsters, street-smart kids, and a heroine who never gives up. A good read for all ages--older as well as young adults. Based on a true story, this is a keeper.
What a lovely book! It brings a whole place and era to life and will be a treat not only for young readers but for their parents as well!
Great product. Thank you!
